Connected Is Not The Same As Working

A modem made you listen to the connection being built, so when it failed you knew exactly where. Wireless shows five bars and tells you nothing. The complaint has not changed and the diagnosis got considerably harder.

The handshake, and what each stage is on your wireless

Press connect and it plays out one stage at a time. Every stage is something a laptop still does, and a laptop shows the same five bars through all of them.

  1. Dialing

    The tones of the number being dialed.

    Your laptop finds the access point and asks to join it. This is the only one of the four that the signal bars are telling you about, and it is the one that almost never fails.

  2. Ringing

    Ringing at the other end, then a pickup.

    Authentication. The password or the certificate is accepted, or it is not, and a device that fails here often keeps quietly retrying instead of saying so.

  3. Carrier detected

    The steady tone, before the noise starts.

    The network hands out an address. A device that gets this far and no further reads as connected, has full bars, and cannot reach one single thing.

  4. Negotiating

    The screech everybody remembers.

    Names get resolved and traffic finds its way out. This is where "the internet is down but the printer still works" comes from.

Only now is anything actually working. Four things had to go right, in order, and the bars in the corner of the screen looked exactly the same throughout. That is the whole reason a wireless complaint takes a survey rather than a guess.

NO CARRIER

When it failed, it told you. It said which stage, it said so out loud, and you could hear the difference between a busy line and a bad one. Nothing on a wireless network will ever do that for you, which is why somebody has to go and measure it.
