We don’t have that kind of time, and neither does your business.

Not all data centers are built the same. Depending on your business needs in the Greater Cleveland area, you might interact with several different types of data centers:

  • Enterprise Data Centers: These are owned and operated by a single company for their own internal use. You’ll often find these on-site at corporate headquarters.
  • Colocation Facilities: Here, a business rents space within a third-party facility. The facility provides the building, cooling, power, and security, while you provide the servers. This is a popular choice for businesses in Eastlake or Wickliffe looking to scale without building their own “digital hotel.”
  • Cloud Data Centers: These are the massive facilities operated by providers like Amazon (AWS) or Microsoft. You don’t see the hardware; you just access the resources over the internet.
  • Hyperscale Data Centers: These are the giants. Think Google or Microsoft facilities that span millions of square feet and house hundreds of thousands of servers.
  • Edge Data Centers: These are smaller facilities located closer to the end-users. By keeping the data “at the edge,” they reduce latency for things like IoT devices or real-time streaming.

We use “hot aisle/cold aisle” containment to ensure that the cold air coming from the air conditioning units goes straight into the server intakes, and the hot exhaust is funneled away immediately. As we pack more power into smaller spaces, rack density becomes a major challenge. In the past, a server rack might have drawn 2 kW to 5 kW of power. Today, AI-heavy racks can draw over 30 kW.

Modern facilities are moving away from traditional Computer Room Air Conditioning (CRAC) units and toward liquid immersion cooling, where servers are literally dunked in non-conductive fluid. This can bring PUE levels down to a record-breaking 1.01. According to IEA analysis on data center energy, global electricity demand from these facilities is projected to double by 2030, making efficiency research more important than ever.

Security, Reliability, and Operational Standards

When you trust a data center facility with your business data, you aren’t just looking for a place to plug in a server; you’re looking for a fortress. Security in these buildings is layered like an onion.

  1. Perimeter Layer: High fences, security guards, and 24/7 video surveillance.

  • Availability Zone (AZ): One or more discrete data centers within a region. Each AZ has its own isolated power and water supply.

By spreading your applications across different AZs, you’re protected from local disasters. If a tornado hits one facility in Geauga County, your data is already being served from another facility in Cuyahoga County without a second of downtime.

How do you know if a facility is actually up to snuff? Look for certifications.

  • TIA-942: The standard for data center telecommunications infrastructure.
  • LEED: A certification for “green” buildings that meet strict environmental standards.
