Cameras and Door Access Belong on the IT Plan

Modern cameras and door controllers are network devices, which means the buying decision changed. What to know before the next security quote, and why the network closet is now part of physical security.

For decades, cameras and door locks were a separate world from computers. A security company ran its own cables, hung its own equipment, kept its own recorder in a closet, and the IT side never touched any of it. Plenty of buildings still run on that arrangement, and plenty of buying decisions still assume it.

The equipment stopped assuming it years ago. A modern camera is a network device that happens to have a lens. A modern door controller is a network device that happens to move a lock. They draw power from network switches, ride the same cabling as everything else, store footage on servers or in the cloud, and get viewed from the same phones as email. Which means the question of who should design, install, and maintain them has a different answer than it used to.

Why the convergence matters practically

This is not a turf argument. It has direct consequences for how well the system works:

  • Power and cabling are shared: cameras typically draw power over the network cable itself, so camera placement is constrained by switch capacity and cable runs, which someone has to actually calculate
  • Storage is a real design decision: high-resolution cameras produce serious amounts of data, and how many days of footage you keep is a question of disks and bandwidth, decided before installation rather than discovered after
  • The failure modes merged: when the network closet loses power, so do the cameras, and possibly the door controllers, and knowing exactly what happens to your locks in that moment is not optional knowledge
  • Remote viewing is a security exposure of its own: a camera system viewable from anywhere is, configured carelessly, viewable from anywhere, and cameras with default passwords facing the internet remain one of the internet's most reliable embarrassments

That last point deserves its own sentence: a security system installed without network security expertise can lower your overall security, which is a strange thing to pay for.

What changes about buying it

When physical security is planned as part of the IT environment rather than beside it, several things go better.

The survey happens once and covers everything: where cameras need to see, what the cabling can support, what the switches can power, where footage lives, and how long it is kept. The system lands on your network deliberately, segmented from business systems, with the remote access done properly rather than through whatever port-forwarding shortcut got it working on installation day. And when something fails at the worst moment, which is the only moment security equipment fails, the people who maintain your network are the same people who maintain the cameras riding on it, so there is no gap between vendors for the problem to fall into.

It also tends to cost less than two separate projects, because the expensive parts, the cabling, the switching, the survey work, get done once instead of twice.

Questions for any quote you receive

Whoever you talk to about cameras or door access, these questions sort the modern installers from the rest:

  • How many days of footage will we keep, at what resolution, and where does it live?
  • What happens to the doors when the power fails, and when the network fails?
  • How is remote viewing secured, specifically?
  • Is the system on its own network segment, away from business systems?
  • Who maintains it after installation, and who do we call when it misbehaves?

If a quote cannot answer these, the price on it is not really a price. Something is missing from it, and you will meet the missing part later.
