Microsoft 365 Backup
Microsoft keeps the service running. What happens to your data inside it is your responsibility, which is the single most common gap we find.
A deleted file, an emptied mailbox, or a SharePoint site somebody cleared out three months ago is not something Microsoft will restore for you once the retention window has passed. The window is shorter than most people assume.
We back your tenant up to storage that is independent of it, so a problem inside Microsoft 365, including one caused by somebody with legitimate access, does not reach the copies.
Restores are tested. The point of a backup is the day you need it back, and that is a bad day to find out how it works.
What this covers
- Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams data.
- Storage independent of the tenant being protected.
- Retention set to how far back your business might realistically need.
- Restore of a single item or a whole account.
- Restore testing, so recovery is something we have actually done.
Common questions
Does Microsoft not keep everything anyway?
No. There are retention periods, and they are shorter than most people expect. Beyond them the data is gone. Microsoft is clear about this in their own shared responsibility documentation; it is just not what people assume.
How far back can we go?
As far as you choose to pay to keep. Most clients settle somewhere around a year. Some industries have a requirement that decides it.
