Technology Roadmaps

A roadmap is not a wish list. It is a sequence, with the reasoning attached, that somebody outside the technical detail can follow and argue with.

We take what you are running, what it costs, and where it is holding the business up, and turn that into an order of work across the next few years.

Each item carries what it costs, what it fixes, and what happens if it waits. That last one is what makes a roadmap usable, because it lets you defer something deliberately rather than by default.

It is written to be taken to a board or an owner without translation, and it is yours to keep whether or not we do any of the work in it.

What this covers

  • A sequence of work across the next few years, not a list.
  • Cost, benefit, and the consequence of delay, for each item.
  • Hardware and license renewal dates, mapped against the plan.
  • A budget figure you can put in front of a board.
  • A document written in plain English rather than product names.

Common questions

How far ahead is worth planning?

Three years is usually the useful horizon, with the first year specific and the later ones directional. Beyond that, the technology and your business both change enough that the detail is being invented rather than planned.

What if our priorities change?

They will, and the roadmap is meant to be revised rather than followed off a cliff. We revisit it on a schedule, which is a short conversation when nothing has changed and a useful one when something has.
