Then we write the plan: what gets recovered first, who does it, who gets told and what the business does in the meantime. It includes the practical details that matter on the day, such as where the passwords are when the system that stores them is the one that's down.

We walk through the plan with the people who would carry it out, because a plan nobody has rehearsed is only a document. Cyber insurers increasingly ask whether one exists.

Every plan depends on backups that restore, which is what backup monitoring and testing checks.
