There is a ritual that plays out in offices everywhere. The Wi-Fi is slow, someone buys the best-reviewed router available, there is a good week, and then the complaints return to exactly where they were. Sometimes the ritual repeats annually, leaving a drawer of retired routers as a kind of archaeological record.
The ritual fails because it answers the wrong question. The question is almost never which router. It is where, how many, and what is in the way.
Buildings eat wireless signal
Wireless is radio, and radio obeys physics that marketing photos ignore. Drywall takes a bite of the signal. Brick and block take a bigger one. Metal shelving, ductwork, a fully stocked storage room, a commercial refrigerator, all of these cast radio shadows. The signal that arrives three rooms away, through a kitchen and a filing wall, may be a fraction of what left the antenna, and no premium router changes the physics.
This is why the single-powerful-router approach disappoints. Coverage is not about shouting louder from one corner of the building. It is about having a reasonable voice in every room that needs one, which usually means several modest access points placed where the building's actual construction allows the signal to reach people.
The invisible problems
Some of what ruins office wireless cannot be seen at all. Your network shares the air with the tenant next door's network, the warehouse forklift chargers, the break room microwave, and a dozen other emitters. Two access points shouting over each other on the same channel can produce worse results than one alone. A device installed years ago and never revisited may be dragging every newer device down to its speed.
None of this is visible from a web review or a spec sheet. All of it is visible to a site survey, which walks the actual building with measuring equipment and maps what the airwaves are really doing room by room. Surveying is the difference between an installation designed for your building and one hoped at it, and it is why we survey rather than estimate.
Sometimes it is not the wireless at all
A regular finding worth admitting: the wireless is fine and the problem is behind it. An access point can only pass along what the cable feeding it delivers, and we have found plenty fed by aging cable runs, daisy-chained mini switches under desks, or an internet connection the business outgrew two hires ago. The symptom says Wi-Fi. The cause says network infrastructure. Treating the symptom buys another router for the drawer.
This is also the polite answer to why did the new router not help. It was never the router.
What good looks like
A properly designed office wireless deployment is boring in the best way: coverage in every room where people work, capacity for a conference room full of laptops plus everyone's phone, a guest network that keeps visitors away from business systems, and the whole thing documented so the next change is an edit rather than a fresh mystery.
Getting there is a measured process: survey the building, design against the measurements, install to the design, then verify with a second survey that reality matches the plan. It costs more thought than a trip to the electronics store, and it ends the annual ritual, which the drawer of routers quietly proves was the more expensive path.
